It is the longest and the highest mountain range that gives home to many endangered species some of which include Snow Leopard, Giant Panda, Red Panda, Himalayan Wild Yak, Himalayan Thar, Musk Dear, Himalayan Marmot, etc. One The Himalayan region displays great variety in flora and fauna. It is also where rare medicinal herbs are said to grow. In the Terai – the Himalayan foothills, there are luxuriant tropical forests of Sal, Teak And Shisham. As one climbs, one encounters a variety of Chir (Pine), Oak, Deodar, Fir, Rhododendron, Birch And Juniper. At higher altitudes the Juniper becomes a bush.

Camping is perhaps the best way of enjoying the wonders of nature given to Himalayan regions and sharing the warmth of its people. Wildlife camping is not very different from normal camping, except the wild camping doesn't get restricted to season or any adventure activity. Take along your camping gear and opt for any of the several camps that are pitched in various parts of the state of Himachal Pradesh. These camps offer accommodation, catering and a variety of activities like hikes, fishing, nature-tours and rafting. Himachal Tourism has camps organised at Sarchu in Lahaul, and in addition to built- accommodation, tents are available at Sangla and Kalpa in Kinnaur, and at Kaza in Spiti.
Camping in Rishikesh
43-kms from Dehradun & 24-kms from Haridwar, the celebrated spiritual centre of rishikesh is situated amidst a calm environment, impressive water front, dense forest and hills. THE MERCURY ADVENTURE AND NATURE CAMP, SHIVPURI (Rishikesh) is located on a silver sand beach on the banks of the Holy Ganges, 14 Kms ahead of the holy city of Rishikesh. The camp is nestled within the virgin forests of the Great Himalayan foothills and is the only one to be situated on the far side of the river offering a unique access, only by boat. With the river on one side and protected forest on the other, the beach camp provides for an unspoiled and exclusive atmosphere for campers.
Camping in Nainital, Uttaranchal
Among the Indian wilds and forest regions there are various places where one can enjoy wildlife camping. Among the northern regions is Chitrauli, situated near to the hill station of Nainital in Uttaranchal and is considered to be a prime trekking paradise in this region. Surroundings of Chitrauli is abound with beautiful flora and fauna offering ample opportunities to Naturalists, Trekkers, Painters and Bird watchers to try out their favourite adventure activity over here. The wild camps of Chitrauli take one to a little off beaten natural treks midst of Oaks, Deodars and Pine trees. This camp provides a pleasant escape from the pollution and grime of the cities to terraced fields, small villages, shimmering water streams and the complete range of the snow clad Himalayas.
Camping in Nepal
Nepal singularly blessed with marvelous and impressive camping, trekking & camping country. It is home to eight of the world's ten highest peaks. Only by hiking the ancient foot trails that link the remote village communities can one gain access to these Himalayan giant peaks. The range of scenery, from sub-tropical jungle to glacier, is as varied as the many ethnic groups cultural heritage. It is not only the mountains that cast their spell. The people, the flora and fauna and the immense landscape combine in a kaleidoscope of sights and sensations that make a camping trip among the Himalayas a unique experience.
There are so many things to know, so let’s begin. The Himalayas are not merely a geographical feature, a range of mountains; they epitomise a people’s civilisational identity that goes back to the dawn of history. If these majestic mountains were not there, the rain clouds sweeping up from the Indian Ocean would have passed over the Indian subcontinent into central Asia leaving it a burning desert.
“The Himalya, the king of the mountains, five and thousand league in extent at the circumference, with its ranges or eight hundred and forty thousand peaks, the source of five hundred rivers, the dwelling place of multitudes of mighty creatures, the producer of manifold perfumes, enriched with hundreds of magical drugs, it is seen to rise aloft like a cloud in the centre of the earth.” In fact, a text called the Sama Veda (Sam Veda) does describe the mountain ranges to be the centre of the earth. To the sage’s description may be added that these ranges are the youngest in India and one of the youngest mountain systems of the world. With many peaks yet to be christened, these mountain ranges have also given birth to many heroes who have scaled its heights.
