Overview

Darcha Padum Trek Zanskar is known as the Lost World, The forgotten Valley, The land where Fairies Congregate. A moral order built around a refined religious faith and a sound economy based on sustainable land-use patterns have created a fulfilling and comfortable lifestyle despite the harsh surroundings. The trail that goes up from Darcha in Lahaul to descend into the Zanskar valley is one route that typifies this.
Cross the pass (13,000ft / 3,962 m) on foot. Buses and taxis are available for the rest of the Journey. In September, early snows could make the crossing of the Shinkun La into Zanskar difficult. Also, the road into Padum over the Pensi La could get blocked.

Day 01 :

Dharamshala – Jia – Supdhar (1,320 m – 2,450 m)

Your trek begins with a scenic drive from Dharamshala to Dadh (1,285 m), where the official trail starts. From Dadh, you will continue along a main road for approximately 1.5 km until crossing a small stream via a bridge. A jeepable trail then branches northward, leading into the tranquil Jia village, tucked amidst deodar and pine forests. Here, trekkers can arrange porters and guides for the journey ahead. From Jia, the trek gently ascends through verdant slopes and forested terrain, eventually reaching the wide alpine meadow of Supdhar, historically used by Gujar herdsmen. The evening can be spent relaxing in the open meadows, soaking in the crisp mountain air and peaceful surroundings.

Day 02 :

Supdhar – Rock Shelter (3,355 m)

The day begins with a more challenging ascent over rocky slopes and uneven terrain. The trail winds left, scrambling over 2 km of boulders before curving right to follow a ridge toward the high Himalayas. As you climb, the scenery becomes increasingly dramatic, with towering peaks surrounding the trail. After approximately 6 km, the path turns left toward a stream, where a natural rock shelter offers an ideal camping site. Here, trekkers can rest, enjoy the alpine vistas, and prepare for the more strenuous stage ahead.

Day 03 :

Rock Shelter – Talang Pass – Oat (3,600 m)

Today marks the trek’s most demanding and rewarding segment. Starting early, the trail crosses a stream originating from the slopes of Talang Pass, then ascends along rocky cliffs. On the left, the imposing Dharamshala Matterhorn (4,798 m) dominates the skyline, offering spectacular photographic opportunities. The ascent continues over soggy ground, rocks, and patches of snow until reaching Talang Pass, the trek’s highest point at 14,500 ft / 4,420 m. From here, the trail descends northward over a snowfield and small glacier, eventually arriving at Oat, a cave-like shelter used by shepherds. After this challenging day, rest and enjoy the stunning Himalayan sunset over distant valleys.

Day 04 :

Oat – Karha (2,500 m)

From Oat, the descent begins along lush green slopes adorned with blooming rhododendrons. The trail gradually drops into a saucer-shaped glen surrounded by steep cliffs, showcasing the dramatic landscape transitions of the Himalayas. The day ends at Karha campsite, a peaceful meadow occasionally visited by shepherds. This stage is less strenuous than the previous day, allowing trekkers to relax and enjoy the serene alpine environment.

Day 05 :

Karha – Holi (1,980 m)

The trek continues with a steep climb over a rock face, where local Gaddi people have carved steps to aid passage. From the cliff’s summit, the trail descends gently through pine forests and meadows toward the traditional village of Majharan, offering a glimpse into Himachali village life. Beyond Majharan, the path leads down to Holi, a quaint village on the banks of the Ravi River. Here, you will stay in a comfortable resthouse, marking the conclusion of your trekking journey.

Day 06 :

Holi – Chamba (by Road, 72 km) / Departure

After breakfast, embark on a scenic drive to Chamba, a historic town known for its temples, palaces, and rich cultural heritage. The journey passes through Kharamukh, offering beautiful views of the Ravi river valley, terraced fields, and small mountain hamlets. Upon arrival, trekkers can explore Chamba at leisure, including local markets and short village walks. This day marks the official conclusion of the Dharamshala – Talang Pass Trek, with onward travel options to Delhi, Chandigarh, or Srinagar.
