Hidden deep in the Garhwal Himalayas of Uttarakhand, the Brahmatal Trek is a winter paradise blanketed in snow and wrapped in Himalayan silence.
At an altitude of 12,250 feet (3,734 meters), this trek unfolds a world of white meadows, ancient forests, frozen alpine lakes, and commanding mountain views that seem too perfect to be real.

The trail begins at Lohajung, a quaint mountain village where legends say Lord Brahma once meditated beside a secluded lake — now known as Brahmatal. The journey takes you through oak and rhododendron forests, quiet hamlets, and frozen streams, gradually revealing the magic of Bekaltal and Brahmatal lakes, both shimmering like mirrors amidst snow.

Day 01 :

Drive from Rishikesh / Kathgodam to Lohajung (7,600 ft)

Your adventure begins with a scenic mountain drive through winding roads, terraced fields, and emerald rivers. Pass through Devprayag, Karnaprayag, and Tharali – where the sacred Alaknanda River flows alongside you.
By evening, arrive in Lohajung, a small Himalayan settlement offering first glimpses of the Trishul massif.

Day 02 :

Trek from Lohajung to Bekaltal (9,800 ft)

After breakfast, begin your first day on foot. The trail meanders through dense oak, cedar, and rhododendron forests, with occasional clearings revealing glimpses of snow-clad ridges.
You’ll pass charming mountain villages and streams until you reach Bekaltal, a secluded frozen lake surrounded by silence and snow.

Evening tea by the lakeside, followed by dinner under a starry Himalayan sky, marks the perfect end to your first trekking day.

Day 03 :

Bekaltal to Brahmatal Campsite (10,500 ft)

Wake up to the golden light filtering through pine trees. Today’s route ascends steadily toward Jhandi Top, a vantage point offering the first grand views of Trishul and Nanda Ghunti peaks.
From here, the trail gently descends to the Brahmatal campsite, set near the sacred lake that remains partially frozen in winter.

Day 04 :

Summit Day: Brahmatal Top (12,250 ft) → Descend to Lohajung

This is the most rewarding day of the trek. Start early, climbing gradually toward the Brahmatal Ridge and finally to Brahmatal Top.
As the first light of dawn hits the snow-capped peaks, you’re greeted with a 360° view of some of the greatest Himalayan summits — Trishul, Nanda Ghunti, Chaukhamba, Nilkanth, and Panchachuli in the far distance.

After enjoying the views and a hot breakfast, descend carefully through the forests back to Lohajung. The journey down offers an entirely new perspective of the landscapes you crossed earlier. Stay: Guesthouse at Lohajung

Day 05 :

Drive Back to Rishikesh / Kathgodam

After breakfast, bid farewell to the mountains and start your drive back. The road follows the same scenic route through the Himalayan valleys, giving you one last chance to soak in the beauty of Uttarakhand.

Day 06 :

Buffer / Leisure Day (Optional)

Keep an extra day in hand for weather-related delays or explore short hikes around Lohajung, like the Didina Village trail or Wan viewpoint, to interact with locals and enjoy the village charm.

Is this trek suitable for beginners?

Yes — It is rated easy-to-moderate and many first-time trekkers complete it, provided they have good fitness and proper gear.

Will there be snow the entire trail?

In the winter months (Dec-Feb) yes, significant snow covers the trail, including frozen lakes. In other seasons snow might be minimal or absent.

Are there ATMs/shops during the trek?

Limited or none. Last ATM/major facility is usually before base village. Carry cash and prepare accordingly.

What is the maximum altitude and any risk of altitude sickness?

Summit ~3,734 m (12,250 ft). While altitude is moderate compared to very high Himalayan treks, risks remain — stay hydrated, ascend gradually, monitor health.
