Day 01 :

Padum – Zangla – Zumlung Sumdo

The trek begins from Padum, the administrative heart of Zanskar. A short drive takes you to Zangla, the former capital of Zanskar. From here, the trail climbs along the valley and follows the banks of the Zangla stream. You will navigate through willow groves and ford the stream multiple times, encountering the rugged beauty of the valley. After several hours of trekking, arrive at the Zumlung Sumdo campsite, your first night under the stars in this remote wilderness.

Day 02 :

Zumlung Sumdo – Charchar La – Khurna Gorge

The day starts with a challenging climb from the campsite toward Charchar La Pass, marked by a sacred chorten at the summit. From the top, the panorama opens onto rugged valleys and distant peaks. The descent leads into the Zumling and Khurna gorges, a narrow passage where the trail becomes tricky and ponies must be unloaded. Wildlife sightings are common here, with opportunities to spot blue sheep and ibex. Camp overnight at a safe spot along the gorge.

Day 03 :

Trek along Zumling – Tilut Sumdo

Follow the Zumling River downstream, navigating dense willow-covered slopes that often require river crossings. The fast-flowing stream demands caution and teamwork, often assisted by ropes for safety. Reach the confluence with the Khurna River and continue to Tilut Sumdo, perched on a ledge above the valley. This campsite offers spectacular views and a tranquil setting to relax after a day of challenging trekking.

Day 04 - Day 05 :

Following the Khurna River – Side Valley Exploration

These two days trace the Khurna River upstream, crossing banks multiple times and tackling narrow gorges. The trail involves steep climbs, scrambling sections, and navigating areas where the river meets sheer rock faces. Enter a widening side valley that gradually opens up into broad meadows and high-altitude landscapes. Reach the fork where two streams meet, a scenic spot to set up camp and enjoy the dramatic surroundings.

Day 06 :

Crossing Zalung Karpo La

Begin early to climb toward Zalung Karpo La, a high pass offering breathtaking views of the surrounding valleys and peaks. The trail intersects streams descending from Rubarung and Zalung Karpo Passes, and trekkers must follow narrow ridges and prayer-flagged pathways. Descend along the stream toward a small confluence, marking the transition into a new valley, rich in scenery and wildlife.

Day 07 :

Konka Wangpo La Pass

After leaving camp, climb steeply toward the west ridge of Kang Yurze, marked by cairns and prayer flags. Reach Konka Wangpo La, a high-altitude pass offering panoramic views of jagged mountains and vast valleys. Descend into the valley below, passing rocky outcrops and high-altitude meadows, a terrain both challenging and rewarding for avid trekkers.

Day 08 :

Kangmau La – Martselang Stream

The trail ascends gradually through long switchbacks to Kangmau La, also known as the Pass of Red Clay, distinguished by its ochre and maroon-colored hills. From the top, enjoy expansive views of the Eastern Karakorams, including the towering Saser Kangri. A steep descent follows, leading to the head of the Martselang Stream, a prime area for wildlife observation, especially blue sheep.

Day 09 :

Martselang – Indus River

The final day involves a short walk along the Martselang Stream, eventually reaching the banks of the Indus River. Here, trekkers can be picked up by vehicles for a drive back to Martselang or Sumdo, completing a challenging yet immensely rewarding trek.
