Himalayan Zoological Park
Himalayan Zoological Park is certainly a place for wildlife lovers in Sikkim. The Park has been established, to preserve the wildlife, without disturbing the creatures and keeping them in their natural habitat. Located in Bulbuley, Himalayan Zoological Park is at a distance of 3 km from Gangtok. At an altitude of 1,780 mtrs, the Zoological Park also tenders a splendid view of Mt. Khangchendzonga. This Park sprawls in an area of 205 hectares in the mountainous terrain. The Park houses a variety of fauna species found in the Himalayas. Some of them are Himalayan Monal Pheasant, Himalayan Red Panda, Snow Leopard Cat, Goral, Himalayan Palm Civet, Himalayan Black Bear and Crimson-Horned Pheasant.
Himalayan Zoological Park is the first Zoological park of Sikkim. The Park accomplishes the perception of modern zoo, where the animals are kept in replicated natural conditions. The best time to visit the area is during mid- February to May and Mid-September to December. The Park is maintained by the Forests, Environment & Wildlife Management Department, Government of Sikkim.
What to See?
The Himalayan Zoological Park is home to many rare and endangered species of animals. The animals of north East Himalayas call it home. The zoo covers diverse vegetation, from gentle grassy land to dense jungles. Animals inhabiting the zoo includes Himalayan Black Bears, Red Pandas, Snow Leopards, Common Leopard, Leopard Cat, Clouded Leopard, Tibetan Wolfs, Himalayan Palm Civets, Large Indian Civets, Bharals, Gorals, Barking Deer, Yaks, Porcupine, etc. Even diverse range of birds here like Silver Pheasant, Golden Pheasant, Kalij, Lady Amherst Pheasant, Satyr Tragopan, etc, can be easily spotted.
The zoological park is spread over a vast expanse of hill overlooking the snow-capped Kanchendzonga. Since the area is massive, the animals are kept in open enclosures. The thrill of visiting the zoo is you have to look for the animals as they camouflage in the natural environment. Be patient in spotting.
The zoo is a fun place to visit for tourists in Gangtok and Sikkim of all ages. The tourist facilities include, a watch tower from where you get a panoramic view of the zoo and the surroundings. You can visit the cafe and souvenir shop, wash rooms and drinking water points. The zoo is one of the modern ones with latest facilities, creating cherished memories for visitors.
